My Private Pilot Experience!

Updated: May 12, 2021

9/2/2019 was the beginning to the next chapter in my aviation story. I started my career in aviation in March 2016. I couldn’t believe I was able to interview with Delta Air Lines for the Flight Attendant position. God was on side as he is always. Needless to say I completed flight attendant training and started my career full time in April of 2016. Back then all I cared about was flying to new destinations. I worked many hours and was rarely home. After two hours of continuous flying I started to wonder what it would take to become a pilot. I questioned if I was smart enough to achieve what I thought then would be too difficult of a task. I knew closed mouths do not get fed so I started asking pilots I work with questions about how they found themselves in the flight deck. I was encouraged by so many pilots to go for my flying dreams and not to wait. Many of them took time off to solely focus on flight training which is what they recommended I do. That started my journey to the flight deck. Don’t get me wrong being a flight attendant was great and I could really work in this career for as long as my body would allow. I just wanted to try my hand something bigger than I could have ever imagined.

In July of 2018, I completed my discovery flight at Faithful Guardian Aviation School in Atlanta, GA. I knew that day I wanted to fly for the rest of my life. I was completely sold but I didn’t realize how difficult this journey I was going to start was going to be. Most student pilots can complete their Private Pilot Certificate within 45-70 hours but for me, I was well over 100 hours of flying. It also took me a while to be giving approval for my first solo flight. My difficulties lied with not flying consistently in the beginning stages of my flight training. If I could do it all over again I would have completed private pilot ground school first. Then completed my written test. I would also apply to as many scholarships I could find and create a budget. I would fully plan out how I could pay for my private pilot 40 flight hour requirement with instructor fees. Then I would fly everyday possible until I completed my certificate. A well written thought out plan is what you need to effectively complete anything in life. If I would have done it that way I would have saved thousands of dollars.

Nevertheless, I did complete my Private Pilot Certificate. Through the hard times I learned patience and humbleness. Everyone isn’t a natural born pilot and knowledge you have to know to fly can be overwhelming but the goal can still be completed with hard work and determination. As I am writing these words I can honestly say when you're going through a process it is hard to have patience with the process. I tend to always want to be done quickly but quick isn't always right. Just because you finish first doesn’t make you smarter than the next person. Now my concern is to be more proficient and safe in my flying experience. Time does not hold me back anymore. Even if I finish my training with way more hours than the next student pilot I will still be proud and satisfied with my journey.

I hope this story spoke to you and ready for your next aviation chapter.
